Historic Sexual
Abuse Cases

Firearms
Law

‘Cold case’ or historic prosecutions have seen a huge increase over the last few years, often leading to banner headlines in the press. These cases are often the most difficult to defend and require sensitive, diligent, thorough and pro-active defence work.

Very often these historic sexual abuse cases involve the word of the complainant against that of the defendant, so the whole focus of the case can be the credibility of the complainant. With the assistance of leading experts we would examine issues of collusion, suggestibility, tainting of evidence and testimony, transferred/false memory syndrome/false confessions. We will pursue full disclosure of all information/evidence held by the Crown.

Firearms in the UK are very tightly controlled. To own a firearm you must have a legitimate “sporting, collecting
or work based reason”.

Our expertise in in this area includes:

  • Advising and representing firearms and shotgun certificate holders in connection with all aspects of firearms and shotgun licensing including grant, refusal, renewal or revocation of certificates
  • Representation in court proceedings for those accused of serious criminal offences relating to the possession or use of firearms and weapons. Advice and representation at police stations for those being detained under investigation in relation to such matters

Taking legal advice at an early stage can sometimes avoid a firearms license holder having their certificate revoked or not renewed. Where a full appeal against revocation is necessary, we can arrange representation at the Crown Court by specialist barristers who have considerable experience, and success in handling these cases.
